Stars & Snoop Dog Kick Off Rock The Vote Bus Tour
June 17, 2004
Bluesy English teenager Joss Stone was among
the celebrities who helped put the "rock" in Rock the
Vote at the organization's 2004 campaign kickoff Wednesday.
Stone performed at the Los Angeles unveiling
of the bus at the center of Rock the Vote's 2004 "Get
on the Bus" tour, which will hit 50 cities over the next
five months. Actresses Jada Pinkett Smith and Eliza Dushku
were also on hand for the ceremony.
That evening, Rock the Vote hosted a party
at the Avalon club, where Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg and Warren
G's 213 performed (see "Snoop's 213 Get Wrong Number
While Doing Things The Hard Way"), along with Stone,
Ozomatli, Kate Hudson's cousin Sarah Hudson, and Pinkett Smith's
band, Wicked Wisdom.
Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson
of "The O.C." and the Wu-Tang Clan's RZA made appearances,
and Maroon 5, who weren't scheduled to attend, took a break from
shooting a video next door to show their support.
Working in cooperation with MTV's Choose or Lose
campaign, Rock the Vote wants to mobilize 20 million voters by Election
Day. The organization hopes the bus tour — which will be accompanied
by concerts and other events along the way — will get young
people "inspired by artists, issues at stake in the election,
and ultimately by each other," Rock the Vote President Jehmu
Greene said.
Riding on a bus emblazoned with a
fist wearing a four-finger ring that reads "VOTE" in
silver and diamonds, the Rock the Vote team will hit the most
hotly contested cities, including Boston during the Democratic
National Convention, New York during the Republican National Convention,
and Miami for the first presidential debate.
The tour will feature performances by Q-Tip,
the Donnas, the Black Eyed Peas, the Dixie Chicks, Maroon 5 and
Alanis Morissette, among others.
