'O.C.'
Star Mischa Barton Lands Role In Voodoo Thriller
October 7, 2004
Mischa Barton
is heading to college.
No, it's not a new twist on "The
O.C." or a real-life Olsen-twins-inspired effort, but rather
the star's first lead role in a major movie. Barton has signed on
to lead a pack of college students through a world of voodoo in
"Hexxx."
"There's a legend of
a tombstone in New Orleans that if you mark three Xs on it,
your wishes will come true," explained Jennifer Klein,
who is producing "Hexxx" through her Apartment 3B
Productions. "I don't want to give anything else away."
Klein is tweaking the script now to be ready
in May, when Barton wraps "The O.C." MGM will
release the movie later in 2005 or early 2006.
"It's a good next step
for [Mischa]," Klein said. "It's an 18-year-old
college freshman who is a really strong-willed girl. It's
a very strong character. She's not a wilted flower."
Barton
has appeared in "Notting Hill" and "The Sixth Sense"
(remember Haley Joel Osment's dead friend?), as well as several smaller
films, but has yet to star in a major movie (see "Mischa Barton
Of 'The O.C.': 17 Going On Famous").
The
actress is following in the footsteps of "The O.C." stars
Adam Brody and Benjamin McKenzie, who have been using their TV fame
to land movie roles. Brody is set to star alongside Meg Ryan in "In
the Land of Women," and he also has a small role in Brad Pitt
and Angelina Jolie's upcoming "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." McKenzie
just finished shooting an indie feature called "Junebug."
Klein,
who was an associate producer on "Pearl Harbor," is also
developing a movie with Lucy Liu, among other projects.
